I'm very sad to inform you that Max Zavanelli has passed away this past weekend (January 27, 2018). This coming so shortly after the passing of George Pyrich (December 16, 2017) and Carlos Flores Gutiérrez (December 15, 2017).
In 1987, Max was appointed United States Secretary for International Correspondence Chess. In 1993, he was awarded the ICCF International Arbiter title, while in 2003 he received the Senior International Master title and the Gold Bertl von Massow Medal.
He had also served as the North America/Pacific Zonal Director for many years. He was appointed as acting ICCF President at the end of 2004 though the congress of 2005. He also served on the Rules Committee and The Appeals Committee for several years.
ICCF-US plans to organize a memorial tournament in his name soon.
